Promo Demos
Traditionally, the promo world has been dominated by men. However, in the last few years, women have started breaking into this specific voice over genre. Studios and networks find it hard to break from tradition, but it’s my belief that just like commercials, women can make just as great an impact as men. With the increasing number of female-driven TV shows and movies, it only makes sense that women should begin to have a greater slice of the promo world. Harper’s Bazaar recently released a list of 12 exciting female-led shows to watch this year. With this many acclaimed shows, shouldn’t women be better represented in the promo world? In a world where men dominate voice overs, hearing a female in the mix turns heads and perks up ears. A female voice needs to have strength, presence or distinction to stand out.
A promo VO talent must also understand rhythm and timing. My years as a dancer have given me an internal rhythm that makes it easy for me to feel the “text between the lines” so to speak and make sessions super quick and painless. This skill is unique to promos and not one many people possess.
